Barossa Bushgardens is a regional native flora centre, conserving, promoting and supplying the Barossa region's unique local native plants. It is a model social enterprise, a not-for-profit business which returns profits to environmental conservation.
Idyllically situated on a 7 hectare site on Research Road Nuriootpa, this community project provides a reference point for anyone wishing to learn more about the region's local native plants.
For information on local native plants listed according to soil type and location, go to our "Barossa Local Native Plant List". Over 100 of the Barossa's 400 species are showcased at Barossa Bushgardens regional native flora centre, including display gardens.
Barossa Bushgardens boasts seven display gardens, such as the "CFS Fire-wise Garden", the "Truly Australian Front Garden", the "Sensory Garden", the "Eremophila Garden", and "The Old Gum Tree" tree restoration project.
Other suppliers of local Barossa native plants are listed on the "Suppliers List". Autumn and early winter are the best times to plant natives.
For plant and seed sales contact nursery manager Pam Payne on 0448 676 348 during working hours, preferably Tuesdays or Thursdays.
Local native seedlings are also on sale at the Bushgardens stand at Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa (8562 2288).
Walking trails, interpretive signage and individually signed plants make a leisurely stroll through the gardens a worthwhile experience. "Self-Guided Tour Flyers" can be downloaded here or collected at the entrance. Guided tours are available by contacting Ray Duance on 8562 1732 ($5.00 per person).
Open Day Plant Sales are held twice a year in April and September. Thousands of local seedlings are available for sale, and guided tours and workshops are also on offer. See the local press or Barossa Wine & Tourism Association (8563 0600) for details of Open Days.
Entry is free. Donations are appreciated. Open to the public 365 days a year.
