Free native plants for our local community
4 Apr. 2022The Barossa Council is helping to build biodiversity in hundreds of backyards across the Barossa, thanks to a native plant giveaway as part of The Big Project.
Property owners will be able to access a voucher for three free native plant tubestocks from Barossa Bushgardens.
Vouchers can be booked with Council during the month of April on 8563 8444 and redeemed at the Bushgardens until the end of July.
Mayor Bim Lange said the initiative was a direct response to feedback from the community.
“We know many people feel passionately about preserving our green spaces, and we’re very mindful of the removal of trees and wildlife habitat that has taken place to help facilitate The Big Project works at our local ovals and recreation parks,” he said.
Encouraging people to plant natives in their garden is one way we can intentionally and collectively make a difference.
“Local species are water wise, low maintenance and provide habitat, shelter and food for wildlife like native bees, birds, insects and small mammals. This means you can spend less time in the garden while reaping the rewards of a beautiful green space.”
As part of the initiative, people can also enter a photo competition for the chance to win more free native plants.
The pilot program is limited to 500 vouchers across the Council area (one per property) and if successful could be extended.
Competition entry details and more information about the vouchers is available at Barossa.sa.gov.au
