Santos Festival of Cycling - Ziptrak Stage 1
16 Nov. 2021The Barossa will host the Women’s Ziptrak Stage 1 of the Santos Festival of Cycling with an exciting route from Tanunda to Williamstown on Sunday, 23 January 2022.
Sunday will also see the Santos Paracyling Time Trial held at Williamstown, with the opportunity to watch and celebrate our Tokyo cycling Paralympians in action.
At 86.1km, Ziptrak Stage 1 is the first day of the 2022 racing season.
We’re excited to kick things off with the women’s race in Tanunda, the heart of the Barossa. This stage climbs and winds through vineyards and lush greenery to picturesque Williamstown.
“The race route starts at Chateau Tanunda and passes several wineries including Chateau Yaldara, giving the race a very European flair and providing multiple opportunities for fans to enjoy both wine tasting and the race.
“This stage is made for the likes of the sprinters, hiding in the bunch and gritting their teeth to hang in only showing themselves during the flat and wide sections approaching the sprints in Williamstown. Wind might play a part as well as the heat on the day as typically this stage has always been a hot one.
“The final climb up Whispering Wall is a classic for every local rider – it can be a deceiving climb and the sprinters will need to stay in contact with the bunch if they expect to join their lead out trains when the race makes the last sharp left turn onto Yettie Road, as they approach the final 3 kms of the race. Watch out for any rider whose palmares include bunch sprint finishes as no doubt they’ll want to make their mark at the first race of the season.”
Mayor Bim Lange welcomed the announcement, saying the Southern Barossa is an ideal location for both the women’s event and paracyling time trial.
We’re no strangers to hosting elite cycling events and this is a great opportunity for spectators, racing fans, and community to see elite cycling at its best and support the local business and tourism industry.
The Ziptrak® Stage 1: Tanunda to Williamstown starts at 11am at Chateau Tanunda with an epic finish at 1.33pm on Yettie Road, Williamstown.
The Santos Para-Cycling Time Trial runs from 9am to 11.30am.
