Changing Places changing lives in the Barossa
14 Jul. 2021The Barossa Council is pleased to announce that the much anticipated, purpose built Changing Places bathroom at The Rex in Tanunda is now open for use.
Grant funding of $100,000 through the South Australian Department of Human Services supplemented with $150,000 through Council has facilitated the construction of this much needed space, in line with Changing Places design specifications, for people who cannot use standard accessible toilet facilities.
The facility, which can be accessed via a Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK) 24/7 externally to The Rex as well as internally during opening hours, includes an adult size change table, ceiling hoist, peninsula toilet, privacy screen and additional circulation space to suitably meet the needs of people living with high support needs or complex disabilities, their families and carers.
This facility is more than just a bathroom – it is potentially life changing for people both within our community and visiting our region with high support needs or complex disabilities by providing a space to maintain dignity and enable greater participation.
The opening of the facility aligns with national Changing Places Awareness Day on 19 July, with the bathroom joining a network of 175+ Changing Places facilities across Australia.
