Elected Member gifts and benefits
Elected Members are required by law to refuse any gift or benefit if:
- It is given in an attempt to influence, or
- If receiving it would, in the mind of a reasonable person, be perceived that it would prevent the receiver’s ability to act impartially.
The Local Government Act 1999 describes how this is required, and the Code of Conduct for Elected Members provides guidelines on receiving gifts and benefits while representing Council.
Where a gift or benefit is permitted to be accepted by an Elected Member it will be recorded in the Elected Members Gifts and Benefits Register.
