Role of the Mayor

The Mayor presides over meetings and acts as the spokesperson of Council. The Mayor is elected to their office.

Mayor obligations

Formal obligations of the Mayor under the Local Government Act include:

  • to chair and manage meetings of Council
  • provide advice to the Chief Executive Officer between Council meetings.
  • act as the spokesperson of Council
  • conduct civic and ceremonial duties such as citizenship ceremonies
  • other functions as determined by Council.
