Employee gifts and benefits
Council employees are required by law to refuse any gift or benefit if:
- It is given in an attempt to influence, or
- If receiving it would, in the mind of a reasonable person, be perceived that it would prevent the receiver’s ability to act impartially.
This is regulated under the Local Government Act 1999 and is supported by the Code of Conduct for Employees which provides guidelines on receiving gifts and benefits while representing Council.
Where a gift or benefit is permitted to be accepted by an employee it will need to be recorded in the Council Employees’ Gifts and Benefits Register.
