Project Partners: Barossa Rams Rugby Club
The Barossa will soon see a new $2.7M Rugby Development built in Tanunda (next to the Rex), thanks to a $995,000 infrastructure grant from The Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing and a further $1,416,000 from The Barossa Council and the remainder put forward by the Barossa Rams.
The site will see the development of a new purpose-built, unisex rugby facility to meet contemporary standards and provide high quality, inclusive and accessible infrastructure that will grow participation in rugby and encourage broad community use of multi-use facilities for associated activities such as Touch Football, extended primary school sporting activities.
The Barossa Rams Rugby team will be relocated from Lyndoch Oval to the new purpose-built facility at Tanunda with:
- unisex, multi use changerooms
- clubrooms
- 1 x rugby pitch and 3 x touch football pitches
- 4 x LED lights providing 100 lux
The relocation of rugby is in response to pressure on infrastructure and scheduling at Lyndoch Oval, resulting from population growth in Southern Barossa and unprecedented growth and demand across all codes (rugby, football, netball, cricket, athletics). The new development will be fit-for-purpose infrastructure that meets the Australian standard for amateur rugby and associated touch football. This will contribute to player safety and improve player ability. The installation of lighting for night competition will allow participation growth in the sport, increase scheduling opportunities and broader the use of the site. The development will have inclusive infrastructure that is female-friendly, multi-use and at a standard that can host code finals.
This project has resulted from a feasibility study was carried out for The Southern Barossa Hub. The study proposes investment in sporting and community infrastructure across four sites:
Williamstown Queen Victoria Jubilee Park
The study identifies that:
- Lyndoch Oval is developed as a centralised, multi-use hub for grassroots sporting activities, other than rugby;
- Barossa Rams Rugby Club relocates to a greenfield site at Tanunda
- Curdnatta Park becomes a satellite venue for junior grade AFL and cricket
- Queen Victoria Jubilee Park at Williamstown is developed for outdoor adventure, trails and leisure activities.
Council undertook extensive community consultation on the plans. Two stakeholder workshops attracted 47 sporting club representatives, while broader community consultation attracted 28 formal submissions. In 2017 Council resolved to progress the concept plans to detailed design stage. Lyndoch Recreation Park concept plan was significantly revised in 2020.
