Building approval types

If you're planning on undertaking development, you may need approval before you get started. For Council aquired approvals, such as land division, building a fence, building a dam, installing a tank, and change of the use of land, view the links below. For all other developments, you can find out if you need approval through the new SA planning system.

Build a dam

Any water development, such as building a dam, that collects, directs or diverts water may require development approval or a permit.

Build a fence

Not sure if you need approval for building a fence? Find out if you need development approval as well as approval from neighbours if building on a common boundary.

Change in land use

If you're looking to change the use of your land, such as vineyard development, you may require development approval before you do so.

Build a shed

If you are looking to build a shed (domestic), garage or outbuilding it will most likely require development approval.

Install a rainwater tank

New houses built in South Australia are required to install rainwater tanks of at least 1,000L.

Land division

A land division is the division of land into at least two allotments, or a realignment of boundaries between at least two existing allotments.

Shipping containers

You'll need a permit to temporarily place a shipping container on a footpath, road or council reserve.
