Solid Fuel, Gas and Electric Barbecues

Solid Fuel, Gas and Electric Barbecues - what you need to know

If you are planning on cooking in a solid fuel barbeque like a Weber this Christmas (or at any time during the Fire Danger Season), be sure to have a back-up plan in case the CFS declares Christmas Day a Total Fire Ban.

Keep an eye on the CFS website which provides a four-day forecast of fire bans and ratings to assist in your planning. Any official declaration will be made around 5:00pm the day prior. A total Fire ban extends from midnight to midnight on the day.

Read the information below carefully and plan ahead to have a backup so that if Christmas Day is a Total Fire Ban Day you have a back-up cooking method ready.

Solid Fuel Barbecues

On a Total Fire Ban

Use of all solid fuel barbecues which use briquettes, charcoal or timber as the heat source (e.g. Webers, Charcoal Rotisseries, Wood-Fired Pizza Ovens or Smokers) is prohibited on Total Fire Ban Days.

During the Fire Danger Season

Solid Fuel Barbecues can be used, providing:

  • There is a four metre area, cleared of all flammable material, around and above the barbeque, and
  • A responsible person who is able to control the fire is in attendance at all times with water or an extinguisher at hand, and
  • The barbecue is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

Gas or Electric Barbecues

Gas or electric barbecues may be used on Total Fire Ban Days within 15 metres of domestic premises*, or on a coastal foreshore, providing:

  • There is a four metre area, cleared of all flammable material, around and above the barbeque, and
  • A responsible person who is able to control the fire is in attendance at all times with water or an extinguisher at hand, and
  • The barbecue is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

*domestic premises means a building or other structure that is fixed to the ground and connected to a reticulated or stored water supply and that is occupied as a place of residence but does not include a caravan.
