Future proofing the Nuriootpa Pool

As the community celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Nuriootpa War Memorial Swimming Pool, The Barossa Council will soon be seeking your feedback on future proofing an outdoor swimming pool facility for the Nuriootpa and surrounding community for the long term.

The Barossa Council has been working closely with the Nuriootpa War Memorial Swimming Pool Working Group and Nuriootpa Futures Association, to determine the best way forward for the future and will be presenting options for consideration by the community during the current seasonal opening of the Pool.

Council has continued to invest significant money into the Pool this financial year in addition to the annual maintenance program; including the installation of a new solar heating system which will ensure a more consistent and comfortable water temperature and making the Pool a free Wi-Fi hotspot.

“We acknowledge the Nuriootpa Swimming Pool is a much loved community asset and many members of the community have fond memories of summers spent at the Pool,” said Mayor Bob Sloane.
“However, use of the Pool has declined over the last five years and given the facility is 70 years old, Council has begun investigating the current structural condition of the Pool and what this means for ongoing investment requirements in terms of maintenance.

“With this in mind, Council has decided to investigate possible alternative options for investing in an outdoor Pool facility in Nuriootpa. We acknowledge that this facility is a community asset and that the community should retain an asset like this, but we wish to investigate options that secure a swimming pool facility for Nuriootpa and the surrounding communities in the long term. This may mean just maintaining the pool as is for the remainder of life; additional investment in the current site or looking for local alternatives.”

Mayor Sloane is encouraging members of the community to have their say on developing a long term plan for the future. Council will be reviewing the proposed consultation plan at its Meeting on 17 November, which will include an online survey for community feedback and comments.

This weekend is the perfect opportunity to throw your support behind the Nuriootpa Swimming Pool and attend the 70th anniversary free pool party this Sunday from 11.30am to 4pm.
