How to become an Elected Member

To become a member of Council you need to be successful in an 'Election', which involves you nominating and running a campaign.

The Local Government (Elections) Act 1999 sets out the requirements for Local Government Elections, how they are to be conducted, who can nominate, who can vote and how the votes are to be counted. Periodic Elections are held at four year intervals, with the last Council election being in November 2006.

The Local Government Association produces a booklet called 'So you want to be on Council' if you would like to learn more about the Nomination and Election process.

If you would like further information about Elections or a copy of the book please contact the Local Government Association website or contact us.
