2017 Santos Tour Down Under

Cycling Action Heats Up in the Southern Barossa

Plans are in full swing for two international cycling races and a suite of social cycling and fun family activities to celebrate the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under in the southern Barossa.

Hostworks Stage 1 finish returns to Lyndoch on Tuesday, 17 January, with the Santos Women’s Tour providing a thrilling curtain raiser the day before.

Two days of celebrations with a “Bike, Food and Fun” theme will be hosted by Southern Barossa Alliance (SBA) volunteers in conjunction with The Barossa Council.

Activities begin from midday on Monday as the Santos Women’s Tour loops through the region, followed by social rides and a “Wheels on the Green” community event at the Lyndoch Gourmet Village from 5.30pm until dark.

“This is a great chance to showcase the best of the Southern Barossa in a relaxed, family-friendly environment,” said SBA chair Simon Taylor.

“We’re inviting everyone to relax and socialise with their cycling mates, go for a treasure hunt ride with the kids, enjoy the water slide attraction and enjoy the premium food, wine and attractions of the Southern Barossa.”

Hostworks Stage 1 action on Tuesday sees the peloton loop the Southern Barossa three times, taking in Williamstown, Lyndoch, Cockatoo Valley and for the first time, Sandy Creek ahead of a photo finish in Lyndoch at 2.27pm.

“There are plenty of top viewing spots along the race route, plus the big screens in Williamstown and Lyndoch to get a birds-eye view of the action,” said Simon.

Barossa Mayor Bob Sloane said the Tour’s return gives the South another chance to shine.

“The multiple loops are a point of difference and give everyone a chance to experience quality international sporting events and Barossa hospitality at its finest,” he said.
